Frames

These types of sofas often come in two types of frames: the bi-fold and the tri-fold. The more common of the two are the bi-fold seats, which look much like sofa beds. They have arms and legs, however, which provide a more comfortable seating. Still, they can easily be converted from a sitting position to a sleeping position. Tri-fold frames are actually the first in the market and, as the name suggests, has three folds instead of two. These types often have legs but other versions sit directly on the floor. Tri-folds provide a large sleeping area.

Materials

Futon sofas come in different framing materials. The most common materials used are wood and metal. Wood frames are often expensive, though, because they need a little more work before getting a final output. However, wooden frames often provide good aesthetic value. Metal frames are also attractive and are very durable as well. They are relatively cheap compared to the wooden frames but care should be taken when buying, especially when they are offered at extremely cheap prices.

Mattress and cover

The advantage of these types of sofas is that it gives freedom as to the color and design of the sofa. You also have the choice in the types of mattresses you want to get – you can go from hard ones to soft ones, depending on your personal preferences. Covers for the mattresses are slip-on types, which provide easy cleaning, because you do not have to include the mattress. Also, you could easily change your covers when they are stained or when you decide to change the color of your interiors so that they could easily complement with each other.

Caring for your futon mattresses

It only takes common sense to be able to maintain the quality of your sofa’s mattress. The most important thing to remember is to use a cover to protect the mattress. Placing a mattress pad or sheet protector over your futon sofas would also help a lot, especially if you mainly use the sofa as a bed.
